Be innovative, create a brand or identity around your own favorite ideas and be consistent in delivery, as well as presentation. It's easier said than done, but have an art style that people can relate to or be entertained by, that way there's some form of demand for your stuff.
More importantly, make sure that you make art for yourself before anyone else. If it's unique and has enough quality/substance behind it, you'd be surprised how many people will gravitate towards it.
